Winterizing Your Boat on the Delta
Boating in the California Delta isn’t just a popular pastime—it’s a way of life! But as winter continues to advance, the Delta’s unique climate—marked by damp air, fluctuating temperatures, cold nights and unpredictable storms—requires a specific approach to winterization.
At Cruiser Haven, we’re passionate about helping Delta boaters navigate these challenges to protect your boat with this tailored guide. Follow these simple steps to ensure your boat stays in top shape and ready for action come Spring.
Protect the Engine
Flush the Engine: Even in freshwater, flush the engine with clean water to remove any debris or sediment.
Add Antifreeze (Inboard or Sterndrive Engines): Run non-toxic, propylene glycol antifreeze through the engine cooling system to prevent freezing in extreme cold.
Stabilize the Fuel System
Fill the Tank: Keeping the tank mostly full minimizes condensation buildup, which can dilute the fuel and cause damage.
Add Fuel Stabilizer: Protect the fuel from degrading over time by adding a stabilizer and running the engine for a few minutes to distribute it.
Batteries
Disconnect or Remove Batteries if in dry storage: If the boat won’t be used for months, remove the batteries, store them in a dry place, and use a trickle charger.
If stored on the water do not remove or disconnect batteries as these power the bilge pumps - make sure the batteries are connected to the trickle charger
Clean Terminals: Check and clean battery terminals to prevent corrosion.
Plumbing and Bilge Systems
Drain All Water Systems: Even in freshwater, any water in tanks, pipes, or bilges should be drained to prevent freezing.
Use Antifreeze in Plumbing Systems: Pour non-toxic antifreeze into any plumbing systems, including toilets and sinks.
Clean the Boat
Clean Exterior Surfaces: Wash off any algae, dirt, or debris from the hull and other surfaces. Apply a protective wax coating to the hull.
Dry the Interior: Use moisture absorbers or a small dehumidifier to prevent mold and mildew in the cabin or compartments.
Cover and Storage
Use a High-Quality Cover: Protect the boat with a breathable, waterproof cover to shield it from rain, dirt, and UV rays.
Check for Water Pooling: Ensure the cover is tight to prevent water from pooling on the surface.
Regular Checkups
Visit the Boat Occasionally: Check the cover, bilge, and other systems for any signs of wear, water intrusion, or damage.
